The Office of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu is a dynamic organisation that exists to support the tribal institutions of Ngāi Tahu and to give effect to the aspirations of Ngāi Tahu whānau guided by our vision of:

The overarching objective of the Strategy and Influence team is maintaining and stridently seeking to uphold the commitment to fair and principled recognition of the rights and interests of Ngāi Tahu whānui. All work programmes undertaken and managed by Strategy and Influence are geared towards supporting and advancing this overarching strategy.

We are currently seeking to appoint a Senior Policy Advisor within our Strategy and Influence team who will play an instrumental role in enabling us to realise this vision. The position will lead, influence and produce high quality analysis, research and policy advice to contribute to the annual work plan.

The Senior Policy Advisor will lead and contribute to a diverse range of work streams at the interface of tribal and Crown development. This will involve engaging with both central/local/regional Government departments and policies to allow for the development of internal policies and testing the ability to allow creativity in finding solutions that provide for alignment with Ngāi Tahu vision and values. This position offers a real opportunity to lead, influence and produce high quality analysis, research and policy advice.

The successful applicant will have expertise in the following areas:

  • A minimum of 3 years Senior Policy Advisor experience in New Zealand central, regional or local government
  • Key sector experience in one or more of the following areas:
    - Treaty of Waitangi/Settlement Claims
    - Law
    - Iwi engagement and advice
  • A degree is essential, preferably in law, political science and/or public policy
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to quickly analyse policy and legislation, produce papers and reports suitable to target audiences e.g. governance, whānau, management or technicians
  • Excellent relationship management skills, with the ability to interact across the whole organisation
  • The application or development of the Treaty of Waitangi or the Ngāi Tahu Claim Settlement Act
  • Experience in the development and implementation of polices and legislation.
