The National Security Policy Directorate (NSPD) sits within the National Security Group, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Its role is to provides policy leadership on crosscutting national security, intelligence, risk and resilience matters. Portfolios include Security and Intelligence Policy, Cyber Policy. Civil Defence Emergency Management and National Risk Unit.

We are a collaborative team currently embedding a new business model focused on building team capability and prioritising resources across our directorate. We work on cross cutting projects and offer a dynamic agile environment for our policy professionals.

The Principal Advisor's key responsibilities are:

  • providing excellent policy analysis and advice on national security matters
  • partnering with the Team Manager to set the strategic direction of the team.
  • working alongside the Team Managers to coach, mentor and develop people, lifting individual and collective capability and quality
  • leading complex policy projects and programmes within the portfolio
  • anticipating Ministers and Senior Officials requirements to deliver quality policy products
  • building relationships across the national security policy community

What are we looking for?

  • significant experience in a policy environment working on complex projects
  • an interest in national security environment
  • knowledge of government priority's and relevant political context
  • demonstrated ability to apply analytical frameworks and methods
  • experience developing others through coaching and mentoring to achieve high performance
  • sound judgement, organisational and political nous, critical and lateral thinking;
  • the ability to influence and engage others within and outside the organisation
  • excellent communication skills - persuasive, collaborative and inspiring

Eligibility requirements: To be eligible for this position, you must have been a NZ citizen for at least 10 years. Alternatively you must hold NZ Permanent Residence or hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and have been a citizen of UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years.

You must also be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance. Ordinarily to obtain this level of clearance candidates must have a 15 year checkable background in countries where meaningful and reliable checks can be undertaken. Where requisite checks are unable to be made, the candidate application may not be able to be progressed.
