Who we are

Turning 150 years old in 2019, the University of Otago is New Zealand's first and oldest University. It has a strong teaching and research tradition and well-established national and international linkages. It is also one of New Zealand's largest universities, with over 20,000 students, assets in excess of $1.6 billion and 4,000 full time equivalent staff based in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Invercargill.

Ranked within the top 3% of universities in the world, the University of Otago recognises that our staff are the key to our success.

The Role

As we prepare to celebrate the University’s 150th anniversary in 2019, we will be announcing a series of events to celebrate our extraordinary achievements as New Zealand’s first university. These will range from research forums, seminars and symposia, to sporting, cultural and civic events, providing unprecedented opportunities to bring together our students, staff, alumni, friends and our wider community to mark this very significant milestone with us.

Reporting directly to the Manager – Communications Services Advisory, you will plan, develop, and disseminate a range of corporate communications that promote the 150th celebrations, and that contribute to the reputation of the University.

Your Skills and Experience

We are looking for an experienced communications professional, with demonstrated experience in:

• Public relations, journalism or business communications roles.

• Crafting and producing high quality communications for a range of messaging purposes.

• Providing advice and support to senior leaders and managers.

• Working collaboratively with colleagues across marketing and communications functions to deliver tailored and seamless services.

You will be an articulate and engaging communicator, with a strong customer service orientation.

Further Details

This is a part-time (18.75 hours per week), fixed term position until 31 December 2019.

Given the nature of the programme of events, and preparations for those, some flexibility in working hours may be required.
