In April 2018, the NSW Government announced the largest investment in museum infrastructure in Australia’s history, which will enable MAAS to expand its operations, and will ensure the Museum and its collection remain a critical part of our local and global communities for centuries to come.

The Opportunity   

We are currently seeking an experienced cabinet maker or set builder to join our workshop team. In this role, you will be responsible for construction, installation, dismantle and maintenance for the Museum's exhibitions, art commissions and projects. Day to day, you will: 

  • Provide advice on materials most suited for use in fabrication of displays and collaborate with other workshop staff in construction methods and techniques 
  • Create and construct exhibition furniture, walls, fixtures and props 
  • Install and dismantle museum standard display cabinets and showcases 
  • Work with various materials including processed particle board, timber, plastics and metal using a variety of equipment and techniques 
  • Repair and refurbish exhibition housings and displays to acceptable standards, including spray painting, hand finishing and other techniques. 
 
To be successful in this role you will need to possess the following skills, experience and attributes; 

  • Relevant qualifications or equivalent work experience in carpentry or cabinetmaking, including reading and interpreting construction plans. 
  • Knowledge of fabrication techniques including metal working, welding and painting including spray-painting. 
  • Knowledge of a workshop, and carpentry and joinery tools and machinery as well as usage of different construction related materials as well as safe work practices. 
  • Understanding and practice in safe object handling or willingness to undertake training. 
  • Australian drivers’ license required
