Napranum is a remote Indigenous community located on the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Cape York Peninsula.  Napranum is 10 minutes' drive from the town of Weipa, 4 hours from Fruit Bat Falls and a 4WD journey to The Tip of Cape York.

About the role

The Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council seeks a reliable and capable person to join our team in Napranum as a Plumber. In this role, you will carry out a variety of installations, maintenance and repair work in the community.

General duties include:

  • Installation, repairs and maintenance on water pipelines, water tanks, sinks, tubs, toilets, plumbing fixtures, plumbing appliances, plumbing trim, underground storm sanitary systems, water piping systems, water treatment equipment, piping and controls and other as required.
  • Review of building plans and specifications to determine the layout for plumbing and related materials.
  • Relieve the Essential Services Officer with water and sewerage issues as required.

  • Remuneration at above Award rates (approx. $66 000 - $69 000 per annum) plus applicable allowances
  • 8.5 day working fortnight (average of 38 hours a week)

Skills and experience

Essential selection criteria include:

  • Trade qualifications as a plumber.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a qualified tradesperson.
  • Practical experience in the operation and working environment of building construction and maintenance.
  • Sound time management and workload prioritisation skills.
  • An ability to communicate effectively in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Class “C” Drivers Licence (Manual).
  • Ability to obtain and retain a Working with Children Blue Card.
  • Agree to a Commonwealth Police Check.
  • Current holds or able to obtain a White Card (Construction Safety Induction).
  • Current occupational immunisations e.g. Hepatitis A and B and Tetanus or be willing to obtain.

Desirable selection criteria include:

  • Current Certificate 3 in Water Industry Treatment or equivalent.
  • Experience in the operation of both Sodium Hypochlorite and Gaseous Chlorine disinfection systems highly desirable.
  • BAS Public and Government Housing maintenance experience, or knowledge of the range of housing and housing related services within the community.
  • Previous Local Government and community experience within a construction environment.
  • Experience in living and working in an indigenous community.
  • Experience in working in a tropical climate.
