You don't have to be a real petrol head but have an interest in cars, an ability to use your hands and be creative and want a career, not just a job.

This industry used to be all about knocking out dents and filling them up, but now it's that and much more.

The MTA is the largest automotive training and employment centre in South Australia and we are hiring Body Repair Technician Apprentices now!

Entry into your apprenticeship

As a Body Repair technician Apprentice, you will learn how to repair and replace damaged panels , components and systems on modern and older motor vehicles. 

  • Year 10 or higher
  • Provisional Drivers Licence

Apprentice Training & Support

  • On the job training
    We'll find a host for you, who has the tools,equipment and experience to help you complete your training in an ideal Work Health and Safety environment(WHS).
  • Off the job training
    We have SA's largest automotive training facility, with the best resources and equipment, keeping up-to-date with the latest advancements in technology through our association with I-Car Australia.

Specialist trade skills taught:

  • Rectify panel damage using the appropriate tools, equipment and following the correct repair methods.
  • Techniques to repair steel or aluminium panels without using fillers.
  • Prepare a panel ready to accept paint primers and top coats.
  • Vehicle panel joining techniques including such functions as welding (MAG/MIG Braze), bonding and riveting.
  • Repair and welding of aluminium bodied or panelled vehicles.
  • Removal and replacement of fixed (welded or other) panels with a vehicle body structure.
  • The replacement of vehicle mechanical, electrical and trim components and ensuring that they function correctly after replacement.
  • Techniques to repair and replace high strength steel structures.
  • Panel alignment, to ensure that a vehicle panels (welded/ bolted/riveted) align with the vehicle structure.
  • Vehicle structure alignment using workshop equipment such as a vehicle jig and appropriate workshop tools and equipment.
  • The use of different computerized measuring systems to straighten and check body shells.
  • Repair techniques for plastic body panels and interior trims.
  • Removal and replacement of SRS components such as air bags and other vehicle occupant safety components.
  • Different joining techniques for more advanced multi-material car bodies(carbon fibre/fibreglass  etc ).
  • Techniques to carry out custom, classic and vintage car restoration.
  • Welding techniques including Oxy-Acetylene and Mig/Mag welding using steel, silicon bronze and aluminium wire.
  • The ability to source, understand and follow Original Equipment Manufacturer's (OEM) repair procedures.
