An apprenticeship with Wilmar is more than just a job - it's a life-long education, and the start of a diverse and rewarding career. You'll enjoy hands-on training, a variety of tasks and challenging work in a busy industrial environment.

Our apprenticeship program runs for four years and combines both theory (off-the-job) and practical (on-the-job) education. You'll study the theoretical side of your apprenticeship at a Registered Training Organisation, such as a TAFE, and complete the practical side in our sugar mills or ethanol distillery.

To support you through your apprenticeship, we provide uniforms, personal protective equipment (eg helmets, glasses, gloves, boots) and a full professional tool kit. We also pay for your TAFE training.

Wilmar Sugar Australia is the nation's largest sugar producer and a major provider of renewable electricity and BioEthanol. Our joint ventures, Sugar Australia and New Zealand Sugar, market a range of sugar and sweetener products under the familiar brands CSR, Chelsea and Equal.

Wilmar Sugar owns and operates eight sugar mills in North Queensland. Our mills - located in the Herbert, Burdekin, Proserpine and Plane Creek regions - operate 24/7 during the crushing season, which typically runs from June to November. Outside of the crush, our teams are involved in an intensive maintenance, capital and innovation program to ensure our sugar mills continue to be safe and reliable, and among the most efficient in the world.

As a Wilmar apprentice, you will work in a dynamic industrial environment that offers hands-on training, an interesting variety of tasks and challenging work.

The program

The Wilmar Sugar Apprentice program is more than a job - it is a lifelong education and the start of an exciting and rewarding career.

You'll enjoy hands on training, a variety of tasks and challenging work in a dynamic industrial environment.

Engineering and Electrotechnology based qualifications are available with completion over a 4 year skill based learning program. Qualifications incorporate on the job training, vocational training, professional development, personal growth and structured support.

Position vacancies

These apprenticeships will commence in early 2019. All new apprentices must be willing to travel to the Burdekin region for approximately 2 weeks to undertake the Wilmar safety program at the beginning of their apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship disciplines

  • Certificate III Electrotechnology Electrician
  • Certificate III Engineering - Fabrication trade (Boilermaker)
  • Certificate III Engineering - Mechanical trade (Fitter & Turner)
  • Certificate III Engineering - Mechanical trade (Diesel Fitter)

Apprenticeship locations

  • Herbert Region - Victoria and Macknade Mills
  • Burdekin Region - Inkerman, Invicta, Kalamia and Pioneer Mills
  • Mackay Region - Proserpine Mill & Plane Creek Mill (Sarina)

The successful candidate

The successful candidates must be able to demonstrate:-

  • Sound achievements in Math and English
  • Electrical Trade Apprenticeships must also have successfully completed Advanced Math (e.g. Math B) and or Physics
  • Ability to follow defined Work Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form
  • Introductory IT/computer skills
  • Ability to work in teams to achieve objectives
  • Ability to travel to complete required vocational training

The selection process will include an online application, review of school results, aptitude testing, interviews, practical testing, reference checks.

Candidates who are successful after our initial shortlisting process must be prepared to travel in order to participate in one of three recruitment assessment centres in either the Burdekin, Herbert or Mackay regions.
