The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes, with over 600 scientists, students and support staff. Garvan pioneers study into the most widespread diseases affecting our community today, including cancer, neurodegenerative and mental diseases, disorders of the immune system, diabetes and obesity, osteoporosis and other skeletal disorders.

Hearing is crucial to how humans communicate, enjoy music, and are warned by unseen dangers. Hearing loss impairs roughly 350 million people worldwide and another 1.1 billion are expected to be affected in the coming decade. The Hearing Research at Garvan is focused on basic and translational neuroscience that is guided by the relationship between structure and function. By understanding the normal organisation of the auditory system, we can determine the pathology that results from hearing loss and design treatment strategies.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Laboratory Head Professor David Ryugo, your key responsibilities include:

  • Conduct experiments under supervision such as testing animal hearing, maintenance and monitoring of mouse colonies, dissecting mouse brains, and performing histological processes that includes tissue sectioning, staining, and microscopy
  • Record experimental procedures and results
  • Keep up-to-date inventory of research animals
  • Perform brain tissue analysis using microscopes, computers and cameras
  • Regularly attend meetings with the wider Research Division community as required
  • Be involved in routine laboratory responsibilities such as cleaning, stock control and solution/reagent preparation

This full-time position is offered on a 1-year term in the first instance.

About You

We are seeking applicants with a Bachelors’ Degree in Science or Medicine (preferably with Honours). Preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated a high level of undergraduate achievement and/or a commitment to laboratory research. The successful candidate must be willing to learn concepts and techniques, and have a genuine enthusiasm for science. Interpersonal, verbal, and organisational skills are essential.
