The Pre-implantation Genetics team at Virtus Diagnostics are world leaders in pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and single cell molecular technology. Based in East Melbourne, the PGD Laboratory is located in the partnering fertility clinic, Melbourne IVF. The laboratory develops and uses novel molecular genetic testing procedures, including comparative genomics, next generation sequencing, SNP arrays and mutation detection. These are applied to the embryos from infertile couples and high-risk patients known to carry genetic conditions.

About the role

(Part time 19- 22.8 hours per week)

The Molecular Scientist Grade 1 is required to provide enthusiastic, reliable and efficient assistance and support to our clinical PGD program in basic laboratory procedures and as required in all aspects of scientific administration. The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, DNA extractions, autoclaving, ordering of laboratory chemicals and consumables, molecular genetic technology laboratory support, and NATA administrative duties. This is a uniquely responsible and versatile role.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in Biological Science in Genetics/molecular biology or equivalent (entry level)
  • Experience in, and understanding of, molecular genetic technologies
  • Experience with sterile technique in relation to low copy number amplification and/or Next Generation Sequencing technology will be an advantage.
  • Good organisational skills

  • Time management skills
  • Understanding of confidentiality issues
  • Knowledge of OH&S
