Detail information about job Extension Officer. Terms and conditions vacancy

About the Role:

Our Client has agricultural research stations based throughout Queensland. At present, they are seeking an Extension Officer to take part in a specialised extension project with a strong focus on farming systems and water quality improvement.

This role is based in Proserpine, North Queensland, just a short drive to picturesque beaches and a quick flight to the world-famous Whitsundays. You will be able to bask in a lifestyle that offers tranquil rainforests, hiking trails, white sandy beaches and the beautiful reef surroundings.

As a representative of the organisation, supporting approximately 200 farmers in the district, you will need to develop strong relationships with regional representative bodies, levy payers and farmers to deliver on key project milestones.

In this role you will be involved in the Queensland Reef Water Quality Program working with grower groups to improve farm practices. This project has a strong focus on reducing nitrogen and pesticide losses from farms and assessing water quality impact.

If you have a passion for the environment and agriculture this is the role for you!

The role will be responsible for, but not limited to:
  • Development and support of grower groups within the project area, to encourage peer-to-peer learning;
  • Establishing start-of-project and end-of-project baselines for grower farm practices and attitudes;
  • Setting up demonstrations investigating effects of specific farm practices on run off water quality;
  • Installation and maintenance of specialised water quality sampling equipment;
  • Collection and dispatch of farm run-off water samples to laboratory;
  • Providing grower groups with agronomic support, with a focus on nitrogen and pesticide management, but with an ability to evaluate whole farm management practices;
  • Leading grower group learning events that seek to evaluate the links between nitrogen and pesticide management strategies and run-off water quality
  • Promotion of project outcomes to the broader community, through District meetings, media and specific information packages;
  • Reporting progress to local industry bodies.

What's on offer?
  • Solid 3 year contract
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience ($74,000 - $94,000)
  • Relocation expenses (if required)
  • Company car for use during work hours
  • Reputable organisation
  • Critical and engaging project work

Selection Criteria:
We are seeking candidates with:
  • A tertiary qualification in Agriculture, Environmental Science (or a related discipline), or relevant experience;
  • A minimum 2 years' experience in the agricultural industry;
  • Skills in agriculture and associated environmental stewardship issues would be an advantage;
  • Strong project management and reporting skills are highly desired;
  • Must have a Manual C Class License
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a willingness to engage farmers on the farm;
  • Experience in engaging with client groups about environmental stewardship is desirable;
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with good time management skills and strong attention to detail;
  • Strong computer skills with an understanding of electronic, web-based and social media communications.
