THE ROLE

DST Group requires an experienced Scientist / Chemist in the field of surface coatings to undertake novel research into the surface coatings used on Defence platforms to enhance capability. The successful candidate will work in the Specialised Coatings Technology Group at the DST Group site located at Fishermans Bend, Melbourne.

The work will have a laboratory-based focus with a small component of fieldwork. Surface coatings will be formulated, applied and tested. A number of key projects will be undertaken simultaneously with some supervision.

As the Surface Coatings Formulation Specialist, you will undertake high-quality research into the formulation, manufacture and application of novel coatings for Defence platforms and will test them against standard coating specifications. The focus will be on the formulation of flexible underwater coatings and foul-release coatings. 

This is a full-time contract role commencing asap until December 2020.

Some of the tasks associated with this role include:

• Formulation  and application of novel, flexible underwater coatings in a range of colours and hues

• Modification of commercial foul release coatings into a range of desired colours and hues

• Testing of these novel coatings against several paint specifications, especially with regards to colour stability, flexibility and protection against ozonolytic degradation

• Planning of in-service trials of coatings developed

• Delivery of progress reports on the status of coating formulations every quarter

• There may be occasional requirements to work offsite for field trials. Location of trials will be regional Victoria, two hours drive from the city

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be considered for this unique opportunity you MUST BE AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN and you must have experience in the Formulation and Application of two-pack polyurethane coatings.

Other requirements include:

• An Australian Tertiary Institution degree or higher in the fields of Chemistry, Materials Science, Formulation Science or similar

• Qualifications from Surface Coatings Associations would be well regarded

• Demonstrated experience in coatings technology especially in the formulation, application, and testing of flexible resin coating systems

• Demonstrable experience in the formulation of surface coatings containing pigments will be highly regarded

• Demonstrated ability to test surface coatings against specifications and accelerated weathering methods

• Demonstrated ability to conduct scientific research through the use of scientific databases/literature

• Demonstrated ability to comply with Work, Health and Safety policies

• Problem-solving, innovative thinking and excellent attention to detail is a must

• Ability to multi-task and strong time management skills

• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or autonomously

• Be adaptable and flexible to deal with a varying workload

• Great work ethic and reliability are essential for this busy role

• MUST be Willing to Undergo a Security Clearance
