Three of well-paid and exciting PhD projects are available within the Environmental Hydrology and Water Resources Group in the Department of Infrastructure Engineering, The University of Melbourne. These opportunities are supported by industry and present an opportunity to work closely with these agencies. 

The Projects

  • Modelling shoreline vegetation to inform operations of Lake Victoria, NSW.  Supervised by Dr Angus Webb (University of Melbourne), Prof Justin Brookes (University of Adelaide) and Dr Joe Greet (University of Melbourne) and supported by the Murray-Darling Basin Association
  • Understanding and managing climate risks to waterway health in unregulated river systems.  Supervised by Dr Avril Horne (University of Melbourne), Prof Rory Nathan (University of Melbourne) and Prof Nick Bond (Latrobe University) with support from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.
  • Improving flow-ecology models to improve environmental water management in a changing climate.  Supervised by Dr Angus Webb (University of Melbourne), Prof LeRoy Poff (University of Canberra) and Dr Avril Horne (University of Melbourne).  Part of a larger ARC Linkage Project partnered with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, the Victorian Environmental Water Holder and the Bureau of Meteorology.

The top up funding will provide $7,000 p.a. for three years in addition to AGRTP scholarship ($22,500 - $30,000 p.a.) tax free, plus additional operating costs. Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens, are exempt from the full tuition fee costs for the duration of candidature. International students are eligible to apply for a waiver of these tuition fees. See this link for more information on fees.

Attendance at both national and international conferences will be provided during the course of the degree. The applicant will work with an internationally recognised research group on urban water management.

Eligibility

Students entering the PhD program in the Melbourne School of Engineering in 2019 and enrolled on a full-time basis. Candidates must be eligible to apply for an Australian Government Research Training Program Stipend Scholarship, and be highly competitive for that award. Australian and international students are eligible to apply. Applicants will be assessed on their scholarship score and relevant previous experience. Candidates with ecology or environmental science backgrounds are preferred, and quantitative skills would be particularly useful.

  • Transcripts from your degrees, along with information on the grading system used. This is necessary for us to understand whether you will be competitive for an AGRTP scholarship.
  • A half to one page statement on your motivation for undertaking a PhD, your research history and experience, including any particular experience particularly relevant to the chosen project, and any preliminary ideas about research specializations within the broad project description above.

We will select a preferred applicants who will then need to complete a standard application for the PhD program in the Melbourne School of Engineering for submission by August 31, 2018.
