The University of Queensland has a vibrant research environment, attracting top grades in the national assessment of research quality in all biological disciplines.  The School of Biological Sciences is one of the largest Schools of this type in Australia with 50 full-time academic staff.  The School provides unique opportunities for study or research in plant and animal biology with research programs spanning ecology, molecular plant sciences, marine biology, entomology, and genetics & evolution.

The role

A full-time fixed term position for 4.5 years is available to coordinate and undertake research on the biological control of insect pests in the Pacific. The position, based in the School of Biological Sciences, will focus on the design and execution of biological control and integrated pest management projects for insect pests and conduct appropriate research as required. The position will require significant travel to conduct research in one or more of the collaborating countries (Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Papua New Guinea). Other duties include working with national and international collaborators, the supervision of graduate students and technical staff and the preparation of research outputs, including assisting with reporting requirements. The position is available for commencement as soon as an appropriate candidate has been identified.

The person

The successful applicant will have a PhD in entomology and demonstrated experience in designing and implementing field and laboratory experiments to investigate the biological control of insect pests. They will have a strong publication record relative to opportunity. They will also have proven ability to manage research projects, including project staff, and be able to work both autonomously and as part of a team. Highly developed communication skills are essential, in order to communicate research findings to different audiences through oral presentations, written reports and scholarly scientific papers.

Remuneration

This is a full-time fixed term appointment at Academic level B for 4.5 years. The remuneration package will be in the range $ 92,142.74 - $ 109,419.20 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $ 107,807.01 - $ 128,020.46 p.a.).
