The Technical Officer is responsible for ensuring the smooth running and operation of research laboratories in the School of Physics by providing professional and technical support along with implementing safety policies and procedures of the university.

The position is responsible for the efficient day-to-day management of research equipment involving cryogenic, vacuum, optics, acoustics or laser, infrastructure and services such as liquid helium supply, gas/water/power supply, maintenance of vacuum equipment, drawing of 3D parts using a CAD package, identifying research requirements, operating, maintaining and purchasing equipment, and overseeing user access and training. This role provides focused support to the Condensed Matter Physics (CMP), Astrophysics, and Acoustics Laboratories.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and subsequent experience in a similar role or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with operating, maintaining and managing scientific instrumentation involving cryogenic, vacuum, optical or laser systems.
  • Proven technical capabilities in areas aligned with laboratory activities such as soldering, metal/woodworking equipment and using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and capacity to implement, the ability to analyse risk in an experiment to prepare safety documents such as safe work procedures and risk assessments forms.
  • Proven ability to apply knowledge and experience to analyse, investigate and solve technical and operational issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) including the ability to liaise with a diverse group of people from varying backgrounds.
  • High-level organisational skills with a demonstrated ability to deal with multiple tasks and projects, establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and contribute positively to the effective working of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply, interpret, advise on the development of policies, systems, procedures and guidelines.
