Our Client is a privately owned Laboratory that specializes in the identification and enumeration of gastrointestinal bacteria (culture and MALDI-TOF ID) and the detection of protozoan intestinal parasites using real-time PCR analysis. The laboratory also performs chromatographic assays of various metabolites in body fluids. The testing performed is offered to health practitioners nationally and with some international referrals.
The Laboratory Scientist reports to the Senior Scientist Level 2 and will perform routine microbiological work within the laboratory in addition will assist other staff as directed by the senior scientist.
Duties include:
• Initial preparation specimens for further analysis.
• General laboratory procedures including preparation of solutions and stains.
• Streaking of inocula on agar media.
• Reading of aerobic and anaerobic microbial cultures.
• Identification of microbial cultures using a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer.
• Processing of PCR samples as required.
• Data entry of test results.
• Generation of reports.
• Performing Quality Control testing as directed.
• Participation in research projects as directed.
• Maintenance of scientific records.
• Other duties that are consistent with the knowledge and competence of the employee.
Education and Qualification:
• The minimal qualification for this role is a UG2 qualification (Diploma in Science). The qualification should include a substantial component of bacteriology.
• Knowledge of MALDI-TOF identification of microorganisms is desirable.
• Knowledge of real-time PCR analysis is desirable.
• Competence in using Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Good communication skills
