Vacancy No: 318934

The State Herbarium of South Australia has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Botanist to join a team building a modern, dynamic program in the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium. Demonstrated expertise in the curation of non-vascular plants, algae or fungi collections is essential. In addition, we are seeking an individual who will provide leadership in developing new research programs in the State Herbarium that are visible and support the strategic goals of the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium and the Department for Environment and Water. Our close relationship with the University of Adelaide provides access to laboratories with state-of-the-art molecular research facilities.

The Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium of South Australia is an institution that has provided visitors with a range of cultural, recreational, educational and scientific services and facilities for over 160 years. The scientific collections include a world class herbarium collection of more than 1 million specimens including many historically significant specimens. Amongst the non-vascular plants held at the State Herbarium, the Cleland fungi and the Womersley marine algal collections stand out as globally significant.

Our Science and Conservation program acts to recognise, document and conserve our State’s biodiversity. Strong partnerships already exist within State Government, South Australian universities and other collections-based institutions and we are a core member of the Australasian Council of Heads of Herbaria (CHAH). The State Herbarium acts as an authority on South Australia’s plants, fungi, algae and lichens and has a strong commitment to supporting and delivering research that benefits the community.
