As we build the WorkSafe of the future we’re committed to delivering value to our people and to Victorian employers, workers and the wider community.

About the role

Due to a recent restructure and the promotion of the previous incumbent, WorkSafe is now seeking to appoint a new General Counsel. In this role you will report to the Chief Executive and be a key member of the Executive Leadership Team. You will lead and manage a sizeable team of legal professionals and be responsible for providing strategic, high quality timely legal advice to the WorkSafe Chief Executive, Executive Team and Board.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include managing WorkSafe’s legal risk; overseeing the development and implementation of Strategic Policy and the legislation administrated by WorkSafe; managing disputes; providing advice on corporate and commercial law matters and overseeing the internal review of inspector decisions. You will also be responsible for responding to inquiries from integrity bodies, such as the Victorian Ombudsman, the Victorian Auditor General and the Independent Broad Based Anti-Corruption Commission. Key external stakeholders include the Minister’s Office, employer and employee representatives, and the Department of Treasury and Finance.

Skills & Experience

The role requires a highly experienced Australian qualified lawyer who has a demonstrated ability to lead and manage within a government context. You will be comfortable contributing at a senior level and being the interface for high level government and other stakeholder relationships. Your experience will include legislative and policy development, administrative law, industrial relations and commercial/corporate law. Some experience in OH&S Legislation and workers compensation legislation would be well regarded. You will have high level strategic, analytical and critical legal and litigation decision-making capabilities; significant experience in interpreting complex legislation and drafting, amending and analysing legal documentation; an ability to recommend strategic legislative and/or policy amendments; as well as a proven capability to drive and implement change and to develop strategies to manage financial, operational, legal and reputational risk.

About You

Key attributes you will bring to the position will include self-assuredness, gravitas, energy and drive; the ability to build trusted adviser relationships; highly developed stakeholder engagement skills; the ability to operate effectively within a complex regulatory environment; flexible communication skills; commerciality; sound judgement; and flexibility, curiosity and resilience.

Location

While the position requires a commitment to being located in Geelong, there will be the opportunity to spend time working in Melbourne where part of the team is located.

This is a key leadership role within WorkSafe and a unique senior in-house counsel opportunity within an organisation going through such an exciting period of transformation and innovation.
