The Company
Our client is one of Australia’s leading food companies with its national retail footprint spanning 140 stores. Its brand is well known and valued across Australia.
With its head office in Melbourne, our client is seeking to expand its legal team by adding a mid-level property lawyer who is talented, ambitious and ready to take charge of the client’s legal function.
The company owns and leases a range of property assets in the retail, commercial and industrial sectors with plans to grow exponentially. The environment is dynamic, positive and team-oriented.
The Role
Due to significant growth and a new management team, our client is looking for a self-sufficient and confident In-House Counsel to oversee the client’s day to day legal operations and manage its expanding national leasing portfolio by providing strategic and commercial advice.
Reporting directly to the General Counsel, you will primarily be responsible for managing the national leasing portfolio (retail, commercial and industrial) and licensing work across Australia.
Additionally, you will assist with the following work on an ad hoc/as required basis:
- corporate matters
- due diligences
- sales and acquisitions
- property development
This role gives you the chance to influence commercial aspects of the business, work alongside a high-performing General Counsel and manage multiple internal and external stakeholders.

The Candidate
This role would best suit a 2-4 PQE property lawyer with experience in a reputable law firm or similar in-house role.
Additionally, the following will be highly regarded:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Well organised, flexible and reliable
- Ability to provide commercial and succinct legal advice, as well as think laterally
- Good people and leadership skills
- Fantastic attention to detail
- The ability to manage competing demands and prioritise matters effectively and efficiently
- Capable of working well autonomously as well as in a team
- Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and being an integral part of the business
