About the opportunity

This exciting new role will work with Council's Corporate Counsel to assist in the delivery of Council's legal needs through the administration of various legal matters and providing high quality legal advice to internal and external stakeholders. In addition, this role will be responsible for the successful mitigation of risk and liability and will focus on achieving corporate compliance with all legal frameworks.

This is a great opportunity for Lawyer's with a minimum of 1 years' Post Admission experience who are interested in working for Local Government and in particular working closely with Council's property team to achieve a high turnover of contracts, leases, Acquisitions, Transfers and more as well as reviewing transaction Contracts to ensure the mitigation of risk and liability.

The Lawyer will provide a complete range of professional legal services necessary to support the regulatory and business activities of Council with a high degree of autonomy. Specifically it will provide accurate written and verbal plain English legal advice to the Executive, Council and other business units in areas such as Planning and Environment Law, Property Law, Commercial contracts, Local Government Law and Companion Animals Law.

It will be imperative that the position works closely with business units to ensure that they are informed of new or proposed legislation which may affect Councils activities.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Degree qualification in Law or relevant field
  • Admission to practice as a Solicitor in the State of New South Wales
  • Current NSW Practicing Certificate or eligibility to hold a Practicing Certificate in NSW
  • Minimum 1 year post admission experience
  • Experience in Court attendance and knowledge of appropriate Court protocol and legal proceedings
  • Extensive knowledge in the following areas of law:
  1. Contract
  2. Property
  3. Planning & Environment
  4. Local Government
  • Proven ability to assess and interpret information to formulate recommendations and provide specialist advice to enable the organisation to achieve quality outcomes
  • Understanding and commitment to ethical practice and acting with probity at all times
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, sound judgement, discretion and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills that build strong, credible relationships and influence, persuade or negotiate outcomes that add value to the organisation


Desirable:

  • Demonstrated appreciation of the complexity of Local Government, in particular the Local Government Act 1993 and Environment Planning and Assessment Act 1979
  • Availability to work flexible working hours
  • Class “C” Driver's Licence

  • The salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with Blacktown City Council’s Enterprise Agreement.
