Dispute resolution is a strategic area of focus for Ashurst globally. Job Overview: 

We have an excellent opportunity for a Senior Lawyer/ junior Senior Associate to join our Dispute Resolution team in Canberra on a fixed-term contract until the end of the year. The successful candidate will have experience in general government or commercial litigation within a top-tier firm, respected mid-tier firm, or in-house. The successful candidate will work closely with one of our Canberra partners predominantly for Commonwealth clients.

Main tasks:

  • Advising clients on dispute resolution.
  • Assisting with the preparation of matters for litigation, expert determination, mediation, adjudication and arbitration, including the preparation of pleadings and evidence.
  • Preparing formal legal opinions.
  • Organising and engaging in business development and networking activities.
  • Contributing to department know-how.
  • Nurturing and mentoring junior lawyers and graduates in the team.

Essential Skills and Experience: 

  • 4-6 years' dispute resolution experience gained within a top-tier firm, respected mid-tier firm, or in-house.
  • Experience acting for Commonwealth clients would be desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Superior drafting ability.
  • A commercial approach and an ability to articulate and negotiate effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail with well-developed analytical skills.
  • The ability to be team-focused, provide leadership and mentoring to the juniors in the team whilst also work independently.
  • A proactive, positive and energetic approach with a commitment to providing excellent service, and a desire to interact with the market and build client relationships.
  • The ability to start in the role immediately would be preferable.
