Solicitor – Dispute Resolution
Canberra
Full time, permanent

The Canberra office has a fantastic opportunity for a junior Solicitor who has experience, or a strong interest in commercial litigation, insurance claims litigation and government litigation to join our dynamic Dispute Resolution (DR) group.

Why work with us?

As a leading international law firm headquartered in Asia and recognised as one of the world’s most innovative law firms, King & Wood Mallesons offers a different perspective to commercial thinking and the client experience. With access to a global platform, a team of over 2000 lawyers in 27 locations around the world, we work with clients to help them understand local challenges, navigate through regional complexity, and to find commercial solutions that deliver a competitive advantage for our clients.

What sets us apart?

KWM Canberra is not your average Canberra law firm. We are Canberra’s first law firm (established in 1927) and are among the three largest commercial law firms in Canberra with over 40 lawyers.  We are strongly connected to the national firm, playing a leadership role in the national government strategy and working across commercial matters with our interstate colleagues. Our lawyers get exposure to national and international matters, and help our clients deliver on their strategic priorities using our commercial acumen.

The DR practice is interesting and varied, we specialise in a mix of commercial litigation, insurance claims litigation, government litigation and employment law.  Our key clients include a number of large Commonwealth Government departments, insurers and corporates.  If you have a keen interest in investigating and resolving disputes, and providing advice on risk and the avoidance of disputes, we would like to welcome you into the team.

About the team

The team has strong leadership from senior lawyers across the group who work together to expose you to good, challenging work.  Whilst working in a friendly and encouraging environment, you will have access to supportive mentoring from senior lawyers, partners, and other legal experts (across different locations and practice areas), deepening your own legal expertise.  However, you will be expected to be a “self-starter”, proactively driving forward matters with an appropriate level of autonomy.

You wilI have an opportunity to participate in social and sporting activities across the office, and support the community via our King & Wood Mallesons in the Community volunteer and pro-bono initiatives.

What would you bring to the team?

Of course you will have first rate written and oral communication skills, strong drafting experience, top notch legal analysis and an ability to get across complex areas of law quickly, but what’s most important to us is that you have a passion for commercial law and providing excellent service to clients.  You will also have a strong interest in the industry sectors in which we operate.

You will be self-aware, positive and have the ability to work well with others; being able to collaborate and work in a team is critical to success at KWM.  In this ever changing legal and commercial landscape, you will also thrive in a culture that embraces change.

You will be the centre of information for clients and transform the client experience by truly engaging in and fostering those relationships to deliver relevant, prompt and commercially astute advice. We want people who build a culture of commitment to achieve the best results for our clients and our people by being innovative and being experts in their field.

Having dispute experience gained in a similar environment is desirable.  Experience gained within the ACT is also preferable as you will need an understanding of the operational processes of the ACT and Federal Courts and Tribunals. Other jurisdiction experience is also valued.
