The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) two-year Legal Graduate Program is a pathway for a career within the AAT and the wider Australian Public Service (APS).

What to expect

You'll have up to four work rotations of six months in different sections of the AAT. You will be involved in a diverse workload that may include the following:

•  Undertaking the role of an associate

• Preparing legal documents and resources

• Undertaking legal research

• Registering review applications, coordinating hearings and handling review related enquiries, and

• Undertaking project work.

The AAT will fund your Practical Legal Training (PLT) and will provide study leave for you to complete the course. You will also be provided with the requisite work experience and supervision to successfully complete your PLT.

The program will commence February 2019.

 

What you need

• Completed the requirements of your Bachelor of Laws or a Juris Doctor (within the last three years before commencement of the graduate program) and are eligible for admission in Australia,

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

• Clear, confident communication skills

• Sound relationship management abilities, and

• a collaborative working style.

 

Selection Process

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to:

• Complete an online psychometric profile exercise

• Attend a face to face panel interview, and

• Complete a short legal writing exercise upon conclusion of the interview.

Please note that applications must include a statement addressing the selection criteria. Responses should be a maximum of 400 words per selection criteria, or maximum two pages/2000 words total for selection criteria responses.

About the AAT:

The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) was established on 1 July 1976 and provides a one-stop shop for the independent review of a wide range of decisions made by the Australian Government.

The AAT can review decisions made under more than 400 Commonwealth and Norfolk Island laws, and in limited circumstances, decisions made by state government and non-government bodies. The most common types of decisions we review relate to child support, Commonwealth workers' compensation, family assistance, paid parental leave, social security, student assistance, migration and refugee visas and visa related decisions, taxation and veterans' entitlements.
