The Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, this newly created role will be responsible for providing sound, commercially pragmatic and timely legal counsel in relation to legal aspects of the organisation’s business lines and commercial arrangements.

Position Requirements

  • Tertiary qualified in law and admitted to practice in NSW with at least 4-8+ years' post-admission experience
  • Exposure to corporate transactions (knowledge of the Corporations Act and knowledge of financial services);
  • Generalist contract review and negotiation skills including with specific expertise in securing strong strategic outcomes with respect to: indemnities, limitation of liability, risk management, intellectual property, confidentiality, privacy and competition and consumer law;
  • Overseeing Intellectual Property issues, trademark registration and defense as required;
  • Driving insurance distribution alliance/JV/distribution arrangements (with Financial Services – Chapter 7 Corporations Act structuring/compliance exposure).
  • Undertaking employment law matters and procedures as they arise.

2. Experienced at finding a way to "get to yes" - ability to innovative practical solutions to novel challenges and be a quick and strategic thinker who enjoys working with entrepreneurial people to challenge the status quo in a legally compliant manner;

3. Negotiation skills & strong commercial acumen - ability to positively persuade and influence internal and external stakeholders at all levels and display strong business judgement and analysis;

4. Autonomous, positive and strong work ethic – confident working independently and as part of a team with a positive attitude and strong work ethic to take ownership of matters with a sense of urgency and commitment (and without junior legal or admin support);

5. Confident written and verbal communication & relationship building skills – ability to explain complex legal issues in concise and plain language and a demonstrated ability to build relationships at all levels within and outside the organisation;

6. Strong legal research skills & eye for detail – able to access current and correct legal information (cases, legislation and articles) quickly and using publicly available online resources and subscriptions and a strong eye for detail;

7. Planning, systems and delivery focus - develop, processes, precedents and procedures for the efficient provision of legal services (including to streamline services relating to contract reviews and empowering the business to be as self-sufficient as possible); and

8. Self-assured, pro-active and resilient.
