About the business

Human performance can be significantly degraded by impaired alertness which is endemic in modern society due to the combined effect of inadequate sleep and sleep disorders. The CRC for Alertness, Safety and Productivity is a research and development consortium dedicated to developing new approaches to alertness management for individuals and across organisations, resulting in higher productivity and enhanced safety.

 

About the role

Alertness CRC is seeking an experienced Intellectual Property Manager, who will work in collaboration with the key personnel from various academic and industry partners to ensure optimal capture, assessment and protection of Alertness CRC Intellectual Property (IP).

As the successful candidate you will assess IP across a range of technologies for patentability and commercial potential, provide expert IP advice to the management of Alertness CRC and researchers and work with external patent attorneys, managing patent filing and prosecution.

Reporting directly to the CEO of Alertness CRC Ltd, this role will focus on the development and successful implementation of an IP strategy, as well as to assisting the CEO to successfully negotiating pathways to market.

 

Key responsibilities

  1. Provide expert advice on identification, management and protection of Centre and Project IP to the Management of Alertness CRC.
  2. Develop appropriate procedures for invention registration, protection and ongoing management including the maintenance of the IP database.
  3. Maintenance of Alertness CRC IP Register and manage reporting IP reporting obligations to key stakeholders.
  4. Manage and maintain a register of participants Background IP and any third party IP deployed in CRC projects.
  5. Support the CEO in managing the Alertness CRC's relationship and terms of engagement with external service providers in relation to IP matters.
  6. Other duties related to the capture and management of key outputs from Alertness CRC activities.

Skills and experience

The appointee will have:

1. Education/Qualifications

  • a degree in a technical discipline such as engineering or physical science and a postgraduate qualification or progress toward a postgraduate qualification as a patent attorney, or
  • an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training

2. Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrable experience in the management of an IP portfolio.
  • An advanced understanding and knowledge of current domestic and international IP law.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide expert advice on appropriate management strategies, together with the capacity to apply this knowledge to individual situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain effective working relationships and networks with a wide range of people and groups.
  • High level conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills together with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • High level planning and organisational skills, including the ability to develop and maintain strategic and operational planning documents.
  • Proven ability to meet tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
