About the role

Reporting to the Chief Officer Member Health, the Head of Hospital & Medical Benefits leads a team to drive comprehensive benefit and health risk management associated with HCF's $1.7b claims spend.  The role covers all facets of the hospital and medical business with particular emphasis on operations and risk management within the external environment. In addition the role will also be responsible for ensuring compliance to relevant regulatory and legislative requirements as well as controlling benefit expense across HCF hospital products.

Key Responsibilities include: developing strategic and tactical strategies and negotiating commercial contracts with hospital groups, individual hospitals, diagnostic service providers, medical specialists and providers of services intended to substitute for hospital treatment. These strategies and commercial contracts are planned to secure access for HCF members to high quality affordable service providers with the ultimate aim of moving towards value-based care that measures and rewards, quality outcomes. There will be an emphasis on developing innovative approaches and collaborative provider relationships that build greater value for HCF customers when they access the health system.

The role has to balance the management of benefit risks associated with hospital services for HCF members with timely access to most appropriate care, at the appropriate locations.

Prior experience, skills, behaviours and knowledge required:

Prior experience with:

  • developing benefits risk strategies relating to hospital and medical services

  • relevant tertiary qualifications
  • well-developed analytical and financial skills
  • clinical experience in a hospital setting
