Wurli-Wurlinjang Health Service is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation delivering primary health care and wellbeing services to the Aboriginal people in Katherine and surrounding communities. Wurli prides itself on delivering a range of health services to the community in a style and manner that makes clients fell welcome and comfortable. Services include acute and general care, chronic disease, men's health, alcohol and other drugs, social and emotional wellbeing and client support services.   

Wurli Community Service portfolio is growing and we offer a range of programs that require suitably qualified and specialised Counsellors / Social Workers.  The role of a Counsellor, across any of our program areas, is to provide holistic, person centred and culturally appropriate case management, education therapeutic services and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and groups in accordance with the requirements of the program specific funding agreement.  

Strong Indigenous Families is a program designed to assist address family violence in Indigenous communities as part of the National Plan to reduce violence against women and their children. The Program is based on a whole family approach to address the causes of family violence. The Counsellor / Child Trauma Therapist role is responsible for developing interpersonal relationships with the client (women and children) to enable them to develop self-understanding and to make changes in their lives within a framework that is culturally appropriate and trauma informed.

Wurli’s Social and Emotional Wellbeing  team is seeking a suitably Qualified and Accredited  Counsellor who is specialised in the area of suicide prevention to support strengthen social and emotional wellbeing to our local communities.  The key focus of this team and the specialised counselling services in suicide prevention, is to ensure holistic, person-centred and culturally appropriate therapeutic services are provided to support individuals, families and groups at risk.

Wurli’s Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) team is seeking a Degree Qualified Counsellor / Social Worker who is specialised in AOD counselling and competent in the delivery of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).  This is a new position in the Wurli portfolio of services. The position is required to deliver specialised AOD counselling and service to those clients specifically identified through the Community Corrections offenders.  The purpose of this role is to assist Wurli    strengthen our holistic and culturally appropriate services using strength based case management and trauma informed practice to assist the clients to achieve their harm reduction of abstinence goals. 

Applicants must be able to demonstrate:-

  • Relevant qualifications (Diploma or Degree) depending on the program service requirements
  • Minimum of three years counselling experience in a specialised area
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and culture, including issues affecting communities
  • Familiarity with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) or other relevant therapies
