Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO)

Ongoing Part Time Position - 22.80 hours per

Badjurr- Bulok-Wilam at the Women’s is dedicated to improving the health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) women and their families. The unit is responsible for raising the profile of and promoting issues associated with ATSI women’s health within the hospital and the broader community. Badjurr Bulok Wilam is also responsible for working with hospital staff to increase cultural awareness and sensitivity of healthcare issues for ATSI women.

Badjurr-Bulok Wilam works closely with Social Workers and other members of multi -disciplinary teams across the hospital.

Your contribution

The Aboriginal Health Liaison Officer is responsible for providing support and advocacy for ATSI women and their families receiving care at the Women’s. The AHLO has a key role in supporting the promotion of indigenous women’s health issues across the organisation and in the community. The AHLO is also responsible for supporting and assisting staff in providing high quality and culturally appropriate health care to ATSI women and their babies.

The AHLO also has responsibility for building and strengthening relationships with community based service providers and key Aboriginal controlled health organisations, especially those in our catchment area. The position also assists in the provision of cultural safety training and education to health professionals as well as secondary consultations.

Your duties will include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Provide support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, babies and their families as inpatients and outpatients
  • In conjunction with the Coordinator, develop, source and provide culturally appropriate print and web-based information and educational resources for both staff and patients
  • Assist in the provision of cultural safety training and education to health professionals as well as secondary consultations
  • Provide cultural support and representation to relevant projects, as required
  • Assist and work with other health professionals to identify and access relevant community controlled services / resources
  • Support the organising and facilitation of significant events across the Parkville precinct, e.g. National Sorry Day, NAIDOC Week

About you 

To be successful in this role you will need to have:

  • Identify and be acknowledged by community as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Victorian Aboriginal culture, values and communities
  • Knowledge and experience of working in health
  • Direct service experience in a complex environment working constructively to provide support and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and families
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively with a range of health professionals
  • Demonstrated ability to work in partnership across different organisations within health and the community sector
  • Commitment to building and maintaining respectful community engagement and relationships with community.
