Profile School

Jennings Street School is located in the South Western Victoria Region at Laverton. JSS is a prep to year 12 autism specific school situated adjacent to the Laverton P-12 College, providing potential opportunities as the school develops for shared educational programming and use of facilities. Officially opened in 2015 with an enrolment of 40 students aged 9-12 years, the school reached enrolment capacity of 120 students in 2017. Jennings Street School consists of 3 discrete learning communities, specialist work spaces, a home crafts facility and play areas enclosed by landscaped surrounds. The school’s location provides potential opportunities for shared programming, and use of community facilities based on Individual learning plans. Jennings Street School aims to equip students with a high quality learning and teaching environment based on current research as it applies to students with ASD. There is a strong focus on student well-being and building effective home school partnerships.  Professional Learning Teams and an integrated service model including Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and Psychologists form the basis for quality teaching, building staff instructional capacity, high standards of professional engagement, a strong sense of collegiality, and a culture of excellence underpinned by evidence based differentiated learning. Role description

A position at Jennings Street School exists for an occupational therapist to join our multidisciplinary team. You will work closely with other occupational therapists, speech pathologists, teachers, and psychologists. You will be responsible for assisting the students to access and participate in their school curriculum.

This position would best suit a therapist who is highly motivated, organised, and passionate, with a can do attitude to work independently and in a team to meet our school’s vision.

Services are focused on collaboration and consultation with teaching staff to meet students’ sensory and sensorimotor needs, and support functional, vocational, and social emotional learning within the school environment. The occupational therapists provide support to classroom staff, including discussion, modelling, and guidance regarding the implementation of recommendations to enhance participation and independence for our students. The occupational therapists participate in assessment using standardised, observational, and formal assessment.

 

Role and Responsibilities:

Provide support to staff and therapy to students to address deficits in the areas of motor planning, sensory processing, social learning, self-regulation and play skills

Provide support to staff in understanding the sensory aspects of the classroom environment

Tailor and grade academic learning tasks for individuals that address core deficits in ASD

Collaborate with teachers to support the delivery of interventions in functional skills including community access, transport, and pathway options

Develop knowledge of school community in areas of occupational therapy and autism in a school setting

Collaborate with teachers on student goals and report writing

Provide specialised occupational therapy intervention for individual students where appropriate

 

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Ability to develop and deliver a comprehensive student centred Occupational Therapy service to individuals with autism in an educational setting
  2. Demonstrated ability to evaluate programs, interventions, and your professional performance and provide evidence of outcomes
  3. Experience and knowledge in providing and supporting interventions that address sensory processing, social learning, self-regulation, motor planning, functional skills, and play for students with ASD
  4. Demonstrated ability to participate effectively in a team environment to develop collaborative working relationships with school staff, families and community services
  5. Demonstrated ability to work independently, to accept supervision as required, and an ability to seek support and implement recommendations

 

Who may apply
 Individuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfil the specific requirements of the position.

The applicant will:

  • have a degree in Occupational Therapy
  • be eligibility for membership of OT Australia
  • be registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • be eligible for registration with State Wide Equipment program (SWEP)
