The Women’s is Australia’s leading independent specialist hospital for women dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of women of all ages and cultures, and newborn babies. The Women’s is a major teaching hospital with strong affiliations to the University of Melbourne, with research and education integral to its role.

As a Registrar or HMO in Neonatology you will be a part of a multidisciplinary team providing care and support to newborn infants and their families.  Over 7500 babies ar born at the RWH per annum.  The RWH neonatal team cares for newborns in the 59-bed Neonatal Intensive and Special Care Unit, attends high risk birth and provides care to babies with minor paediatric issues on the postnatal ward.

Each Registrar/HMO will have a Consultant Neonatologist nominated to be his/her mentor/educational supervisor whilst at the hospital. Neonatal fellows are on site 24 hours per day to provide support and clinical assistance.  There is a close working relationship with the Obstetric Department and the paediatric subspecialties based at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

The Royal Women's Hospital Neonatal Service is an accredited site for basic and advanced training in Paediatrics with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).  Please note that basic training will only be acknowledge and accredited by the RACP for positions obtained centrally through application and interview with the Victorian Paediatric Training Program.  These posts, whilst providing the same clinical exposure, teaching and learning, mentoring and supervision for all staff, cannot be used towards accredited neonatal training as per RACP basic paediatric training program.  Advanced paediatric trainees can apply for positions posted here; after review and approval by a RACP Director of Physician Education (DPE) the time as a registrar at the RWH will be accredited for advanced paediatric training.

These positions in neonatal paediatrics are suitable for doctors (aspiring paediatricians, obstetricians, anaesthetists or emergency trainees) with previous neonatal experience, however this is not essential.  The level of experience and training status will determine if successful candidates are appointed at the HMO or Registrar Level.  This position offers an active education program with a focus on research and participation in research is encouraged and supported; those appointed at the level of registrar are strongly encouraged to engage in an audit or research project in accordance with their position description..
