Detail information about job Sexual Health Nurse. Terms and conditions vacancy

About the role

MacKillop Family Services in partnership with the University of Melbourne are implementing an action research project using prevention strategies to address sexual health and safety concerns for children and young people living in out-of-home care, including harmful sexual behaviour, child sexual exploitation and respectful relationships.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has recommended that all state and territory governments should develop child sexual abuse prevention education strategies for children and young people living in out-of-home care.  Many jurisdictions have developed curriculums for sexual health education, child sexual abuse prevention education or respectful relationships education to be delivered in school settings. However, children & young people, particularly those living in residential care, may be disengaged from school and miss out on the learning opportunities in this area.

In this newly created position, as the Sexual Health Nurse, you will work in conjunction with a number of key stakeholders to implement the Prevention Strategy – Whole-of-house respectful relationships and sexuality education.

This is a part-time (0.6EFT), fixed term position to August 2021.  While based within MacKillop’s dedicated Policy and Research team in South Melbourne, the position will spend a substantial amount of time at residential houses and other MacKillop sites across Melbourne, and occasionally regional Victoria.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver sexual health and safety prevention education to children and young people in residential houses and foster care households using a flexible, trauma-informed approach that takes into account child and adolescent development, is culturally safe and tailored to the needs of children in out-of-home-care, with a particular focus on harmful sexual behaviour, child sexual exploitation and domestic and family violence.
  • Support MacKillop out-of-home care staff to establish a whole-of-house respectful relationships and sexuality education approach, initially in four pilot residential houses.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Current nursing registration
  • Demonstrated current clinical skills and knowledge in reproductive and sexual health
  • Demonstrated experience in the area of sexual health education
  • Experience working with children and young people in out-of-home care.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and an awareness of the current issues faced by Aboriginal children, young people and their families.
  • Experience and understanding of complex trauma, mental health, drug and alcohol and other health issues potentially facing young people.
  • Solid understanding of the services available to young people, especially related to sexual health and safety in the Melbourne area.

This is a fantastic opportunity to drive this contemporary initiative, whilst supporting MacKillop’s therapeutic work.  If you are excited about making a positive contribution to the lives of children, youth and families then we want to hear from you.

Excellent salary packaging options are available.
