Department/Unit Specific Overview

The Clinical Education Program supports the hospital to achieve its strategic directions by the provision of frameworks for the professional development of health professionals. The Clinical Education Program supports the growth and maintenance of the future nursing and midwifery workforce through coordination of the nursing and midwifery student, graduate and Transition to Specialty Practice (TSP) programs. The Clinical Education Program further collaborates with other health professional groups to promote best practice clinical learning environments (BPCLE) across the organization. The Clinical Education Program promotes pathways for engagement and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Professional Students and works with services to promote culturally safe environments for learning. The Clinical Education Program is the central collaborator for the Women’s Health Legal Alliance with Inner Melbourne Legal Service.

The Clinical Education Program promotes and supports contemporary professional practice within a collaborative framework, increasingly engaging a variety of self-directed and multi-media activities which incorporate adult learning principles and meet organisational needs to have workforce of safe, competent health professionals.

Newborn, Intensive and Special Care

Newborn Intensive and Special Care (NICU) is a tertiary level nursery where specialist care is provided to approximately 1600 premature and medically very sick babies per year (695 Intensive Care). The unit also has a key role in providing education and training for local, national and international health professionals and has an extensive research program.

The Women's neonatal unit has been designed as one unit with both intensive and special care nursery pods; with a total of 59 cots. The NICU model of care is under pinned by several principles which were developed to improve consistency and continuity of care and the engagement of families.

Your contribution  

The Clinical Educator (NICU) is a pivotal learning support position. This position works under the direction of the Clinical Educator Grade 5 and be responsible for delivery of pre-developed fixed neonatal professional development portfolios.

Your duties will include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Coordination of the clinical experience to employed post-graduate NICU learners in collaboration with partner education providers, the clinical support nurse team and the NICU leadership team
  • Development of the NICU professional development (in-service calendar)
  • Coordination of the clinical and NICU theoretical components of the graduate program

About you

To be successful within this role you will need to have:

  • Registered Nurse with recent and extensive clinical skills in care of the neonate in the NICU environment
  • Post graduate certificate/diploma/masters in Neonatal intensive care.
  • Previous clinical supervision/preceptoring experience
