About the business

The NSPT is informed by the Black Dog Institute's LifeSpan framework, and the National LGBTI Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Strategy. The Brisbane North NSPT is a collaborative between Brisbane North PHN, the Queensland AIDS Council (QuAC), Open Doors Youth Service, and the Centre for Human Potential (CHP). Participants referred into the NSPT will have access to a face to face session with a psychologist within 48 hours of referral, and then as needed in that week, with limited follow-up for up to three months. In conjunction with the clinical support, participants will have access to case management and support facilitation for the period of their engagement with the NSPT.  This position is based at the QUEENSLAND AIDS COUNCIL.

About the role

The role will involve working alongside LGBTIQ people and their carers or families to assist them in accessing services and supports from multiple sectors that will address the challenges in their lives that may be contributing to poor mental health outcomes and/or suicidality.

This position requires an extensive knowledge and experience of working with the LGBTIQ community, with an emphasis on provision of services to people most at risk. Experience working with people with a wide range of mental health issues and challenges including chronic health conditions, legal matters, housing, trauma, financial, and alcohol and drug use, is essential.

The successful applicant for this position will bring solid experience in the human services environment. In particular, they will demonstrate an understanding of how best to access, advocate, and maintain services for LGBTIQ people impacted by suicide.     Skills and experience

    • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, or Nursing (mental health).
    • Demonstrated experience in client intake, assessment and support coordination of clients at high risk of suicide and/or bereaved by suicide.
    • Demonstrated experience in working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex clients, and an understanding of issues these people may face whilst accessing mental health services.

    • Commitment to working from within client centred practice frameworks that build self worth, increase social connectedness and have a basis in social justice.

    • Highly developed interpersonal, communication, confidentiality and negotiation skills and the capacity to build and maintain relationships within Queensland AIDS Council and with external stakeholders.

    • Have a minimum two (2) years experience practicing as a Social Worker, Psychologist, Mental Health Occupational Therapist or Mental Health Nurse.

    • Have completed or be willing to complete a Suicide Prevention Program Training.

    • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and ethical practice, including meeting the ongoing requirements of the relevant professional body's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program.

    Other Requirements

    • Work outside normal business hours may be required.
       
    • Eligibility for a Blue Card from the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian and successful Police Check.
       
    • Membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), Australian Psychological Society or equivalent professional registration.
