Purpose of Position

  • Participation in the Emergency Department roster, inclusive of day, evening, night and weekend shifts.
  • To perform patient assessment and clinical examination of patients, both within the department, and occasionally in other hospital departments/inpatient units (eg Medical Emergency Team (MET) Calls at Coffs Harbour Health Campus and CERS response for Macksville District Hospital.
  • To perform necessary procedures for critical care patients within the scope of abilities and training, or under the supervision of Macksville FACEMs, the Network Director for Emergency Medicine Coffs Clinical Network (CCN) or nominee (ie Senior Medical Practitioner)
  • To be responsible to, and carry out the instructions of the Director of Emergency, Macksville, Director of Training Macksville, Network Director of Emergency Medicine, CCN or nominee at Coffs Harbour Health Campus or Macksville District Hospital.
  • To receive and provide detailed verbal handover between Medical Officers at the commencement and end of each shift.
  • To work within a multidisciplinary team, including liaison with referring Medical Practitioners and the arrangements for transfer of patients to tertiary institutions.
  • To maintain appropriate medical records, including electronic, to ensure effective communication; to facilitate service planning and to meet legal requirements.
  • Participate in the Critical Care retrieval roster as experience allows.
  • To participate in educational programs and to assist in the education of medical and nursing staff.
  • To participate in audit and quality assurance activities.
  • To comply with all legislative requirements under Occupational Health & Safety, Privacy Acts, and EEO and to conduct all activity in a professional and responsible manner.
  • Perform other duties not inconsistent with the Award, Agreement or Terms of Employment as may be directed or implied from time to time.
  • To supervise junior medical staff and students that rotate to the Emergency Department
  • To undertake activities in compliance with protocols, procedures and policies of the Emergency Department, Coffs Harbour Health Campus and Macksville District Hospital

Macksville District Hospital is a level 3, rural, 42 bed facility located in the Nambucca Shire.  It provides inpatient acute services, birthing, emergency medicine services and day-only surgical services.  The Emergency Department sees approximately 13000 presentations annually with 48% of presentations comprising ATS 1-3.

The Emergency Department is staffed by three doctors over a 24 hour period.  There is 1.0 FTE FACEM coverage with phone access to specialist support at all other times.

Selection Criteria

MBBS or equivalent Current unconditional and unlimited registration with the Medical Board of Australia Minimum 4 years relevant post graduate experience in Emergency Department Medicine Demonstrated current competency in: patient care for all triage categories, all ages; Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation; Airway Management; Early Management of Severe Trauma; head and spinal injuries; management of medical, surgical and obstetric emergencies; management of Paediatric emergency presentations; assessment and management of acute Psychiatric presentations. Demonstrated ability to provide safe effective patient care, working independently and without direct supervision. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and computer skills. Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills
