What you'll be doing
The Senior Research Officer will lead the scientific aspects of the broader translational research program that is focused on building a biocompatible valved conduit for use in structural heart disease repair. They will focus on the design, biomaterial fabrication and pre-clinical testing of the conduit. The Research Officer will coordinate the inputs of cardiologists specialising in imaging technology, bioengineers and cell therapy specialists in this endeavour.

The Senior Research Officer will be responsible for managing the laboratory, supervising students and supporting the academic workflow including ethics submission and day to day management of collaborations.

The preferred applicants will be considered for the award of a conjoint academic title in the Faculty of Medicine of The University of Sydney at a level commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience. The award of the academic title will also confer membership upon the appointee of the Discipline of Paediatrics & Child Health. The academic title will be held for the duration of Kids Research at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to Kids Research at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for research and clinical matters.


  • Demonstrated research skills together with a proven capacity for independently managing collaborative research projects; these skills may have been obtained within a tertiary institution or in industry
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with high level of competency in both written and spoken English.
  • Experience in a range of science such as synthesis of polymers, particularly elastic biomaterials for biomedical applications, more specifically tissue engineering of organs such as heart, polymer processing such as 3D printing
  • In depth knowledge and hands on analytical techniques such as NMR, FTIR, HPLC, Mass Spectrometry, mechanical testing and also in vitro biological assays or in vivo studies
  • A strong record of achieving research outcomes (including conference and journal publications)
  • A demonstrated ability in applying for competitive research funding
  • Experience in research training, including the supervision of honours students
  • A proven track record of working collaboratively across different research disciplines and with industry
