This is an identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander position. The successful applicant may be eligible to apply for a postgraduate degree half scholarship (Master’s) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The JH&FMHN Scholarship provide one half (50%) remission of whichever fees are applicable to the course being undertaken.
The Forensic Hospital is an integral part of the Forensic Mental Health Network and is operated by the Justice Health & Forensic Mental Health Network. Located at Malabar this purpose-built 135-bed facility provides high-quality specialised care to male and female, young people and adult forensic patients, in a high-secure therapeutic environment.
The permanent full-time clinical position of Aboriginal Mental Health Professional aims to improve access to services and enhance the health and wellbeing for Aboriginal adults and young people in the Forensic Hospital. This position will also be involved in supporting Aboriginal cultural awareness and cultural safety training for clinical teams and liaising with Aboriginal services in the community, in collaboration with the Aboriginal Health Unit.
You will be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island decent with a tertiary qualification in a health, education, social sciences, community services or related field. You will have demonstrated experience with improving the mental health and wellbeing services, and working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island people and their families. A high level of experience in establishing partnerships with key stakeholders is required, along with demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills.

A comprehensive two week full time orientation is provided, with the start date being 6 August 2018 or 15 October 2018.
- Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent authorised under section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act (NSW) 1977.
- A tertiary qualification in a health, education, social sciences, community services or related field - such as social work, welfare work, occupational therapy, mental health.
- Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and communities, understanding and expertise with Aboriginal culture and understanding of social and emotional wellbeing issues experience by Aboriginal people.
- Demonstrated skills and experience with, improving the mental health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people and their families and promoting culturally aware and safe health services.
- High level experience with effectively establishing partnerships and processes with a range of internal and external stakeholders including Multi-Disciplinary Teams, local Aboriginal communities and senior staff.
- Demonstrated high level oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to prepare reports and submissions.
- Demonstrated computer literacy.
