Paediatric HMO Position - 2019

Northern Health provides public healthcare to a population of over 580,000 people in Melbourne’s rapidly growing northern growth corridor.

The Paediatric Department is a vibrant and busy unit that cares for general paediatric and neonatal patients.  The department has a 22 bed Children’s Unit which includes 4 Paediatric Short Stay Unit beds. There is a 2 bed Paediatric High Dependency Unit which is attached to the adult intensive care unit.  The Neonatal Unit (18 cots funded) provides high dependency neonatal care and is a level 5 capability which provides 24 hours and 7 days neonatologist cover and manages infants requiring care with CPAP, Hi-Flow, TPN, chest drainage and ROP screening. There are more than 3600 infants born annually by the obstetric service.

The Emergency Department is the busiest in Victoria and 20% of attendances are paediatric patients.  The hospital has a dedicated paediatric emergency department staffed by Paediatric Emergency Specialists, Paediatricians and emergency paediatric registrars.

There are 5 general paediatric consultants and four dual trained consultant neonatologists.  Visiting specialists provide outpatient services in respiratory medicine, neurology, genetics, allergy and rheumatology. There is a chief registrar, seven paediatric registrars plus one senior resident and seven junior residents who provide 24 hours cover. The paediatric unit is an excellent environment to learn General Paediatrics and Neonatal Medicine.

Paediatric HMOs rotate through the Children’s Unit and Neonatal Unit. HMOs are closely supervised by paediatric registrars, and their duties include day to day care of children, supervised attendance at deliveries and experience in neonatal resuscitation, assessment of children on referral from the Emergency Department and attendance at outpatient clinics. Most of the clinical work load is in acute paediatrics but there is plenty of opportunity to see patients with less acute problems in the outpatient clinics.

There is a two week orientation programme at the beginning of each six-month rotation, and regular teaching sessions throughout the term. These include two dedicated weekly registrar and HMO teaching sessions (neonatal medicine and general paediatrics) as well as a weekly departmental teaching meeting for all staff (including regular morbidity meetings). Each workday including weekends there is a dedicated Consultant-led morning hand over and teaching ward round.

Northern Health is committed to medical education & training through the Teaching, Training & Research Precinct - a joint venture with The University of Melbourne, La Trobe University and the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments.

The HMO positions are ideal for either General Practice Trainees, for the 6 month paediatric experience in completing the Diploma of Child Health, or those considering a career in Paediatrics.

Applicants must have satisfactorily completed their pre-registration (intern) year; ie must be PGY2+.

To be successful in this role you must also demonstrate a commitment to Northern Health's values, a commitment to patient centred care and a commitment to your ongoing education.

Further questions can be directed to: Dr David Tran, Clinical Director of Paediatrics ([email protected]) or A/Prof Wei Qi Fan ([email protected]), Head of Neonatal Unit & Supervisor for paediatric Trainees.
