Paediatric Registrar Position - 2019

Northern Health provides public healthcare to a population of over 580,000 people in Melbourne’s rapidly growing northern growth corridor.

The Paediatric Department is a vibrant, busy and cares for general paediatric and neonatal patients.  The department has a 22 bed Children’s Unit which includes 4 Paediatric Short Stay Unit beds. There is a 2 bed Paediatric High Dependency Unit (HDU) which is attached to the adult intensive care unit.  The Neonatal Unit (18 cots funded) provides high dependency neonatal care and is a level 5 capability which provides 24 hour/7 day a week neonatologist cover, TPN, chest drainage and ROP screening. There are more than 3600 infants born annually by the obstetric service.

The Emergency Department is the busiest in Victoria and 20% of attendances are paediatric patients.  The hospital has a busy separate paediatric emergency department staffed by a fulltime Emergency Paediatric Specialist, several sessional Emergency Paediatric Specialists, Paediatricians and emergency paediatric registrars.

There are 5 general paediatric consultants, four dual trained consultant neonatologists.  Visiting specialists provide outpatient services in respiratory medicine, neurology, genetics, allergy and rheumatology. There are seven paediatric registrars plus one senior resident and seven junior residents who provide 24 hours cover. The paediatric unit is an excellent environment to learn General Paediatrics and neonatal medicine. Registrars are responsible for day to day running of the Children’s Unit, Paediatric Short Stay Unit, Paediatric HDU and the Neonatal Unit, and are well supported by our General Paediatricians and neonatologist. Registrars attend high-risk newborn deliveries and review infants on the post-natal ward with close supervision and support. The registrars have opportunities to attend daily consultant supervised outpatient clinics. The unit has regular 2 hours rostered paediatric and neonatal teaching sessions for registrars and HMOs as well as a weekly paediatric unit clinical meeting.
