Position Summary:

A vacancy exists in the above unit for a highly motivated individual with appropriate knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team. The successful applicant(s) will be expected to be able to:


  • Assist in the management of all aspects of the scientific and ethical review of research involving human subjects in accordance with the NHMRC National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research and NSW Health Policies and Guidelines.
  • Undertake comprehensive reviews of all research governance activities such as Site Specific Applications (SSAs) and other research related contracts such as Clinical Trial Research Agreements.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the review and approval of all research activities across the St Vincent's Research Precinct to ensure compliance with the relevant Hospital & Institutional policies and procedures, NSW Health Directives and other relevant State and Federal guidelines, regulations and legislation



The Research Officer (RO) is a key position within the Research Office and is responsible for undertaking comprehensive reviews of all research submissions to the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC), Site Specific Applications (SSAs) and other research related contracts such as Clinical Trial Agreements. The RO assists in the administration of the business of Human Research Ethics Committee and will be closely involved in the ongoing implementation of the new Research Ethics and Governance Information System (REGIS) in the next 6-12 months. The RO is also involved in research study data management and the collection of research metrics required by St Vincent’s Hospital and the NSW Ministry of Health.



The RO will provide leadership and high quality advice and services to facilitate the efficient review, approval, monitoring, reporting and administration of research conducted within St Vincent’s Health Network Sydney and across the St Vincent’s Research Precinct to ensure compliance with the relevant Hospital & Institutional policies and procedures, NSW Health Directives and other relevant State and Federal guidelines, regulations and legislation. In addition, the RO will assist in the implementation and management of policies, procedures and processes which support best practice in research ethics and governance. The St Vincent’s Hospital Research Office is a busy environment with a high volume of work and competing demands. The role of RO is suited to an individual who is self-motivated with the ability to prioritise a significant workload, a confident and clear communicator (written and oral) and operates well in team environment.



The vacancy is open to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens who hold a valid New Zealand passport, Australian permanent residents and those non-residents deemed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to be eligible to work in Australia only.

Selection Criteria

  • Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia
  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, demonstrated equivalent or considerable experience in a relevant field.
  • Experience in research project management, including experience with submission of clinical research projects including an understanding of issues relating to university and hospital research environment and processes.
  • Understanding of the legislation, codes and guidelines relevant to clinical and research ethics and governance, and in particular the NHMRC National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, relevant privacy acts and guidelines, the Human Tissue Act, and the Therapeutic Goods Act as it relates to use of medications in human research.
  • Ability to be adaptable and prioritise workload in order to meet strict deadlines, be solution-driven, lead change and influence people, and work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Experience in using office computer applications, including word processing and spreadsheets and other ERP systems.
  • Willingness to be flexible and adapt to the changing needs of the Research Office.
  • Demonstrated highly effective communication, interpersonal, team development, conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
