This new translational genetic counselling position in genomics has been created to organise the GenomeConnect transition of care clinics at Children's Hospital Westmead/Liverpool under the supervision of clinical geneticists. GenomeConnect is a clinical academic group supported by the multi-institution Sydney Partnership for Health, Education, Research and Enterprise (SPHERE). The successful applicant will be a key member for this new health initiative and will provide comprehensive genetic counselling and clinic support. This role will involve the development of documentation for genomic care in NSW, the maintenance of clinical records, and facilitation of genomic testing. The successful applicant will receive, screen and triage referrals, provide support and arrange contact with genetic support services and co-ordinate multidisciplinary team attendance in the transition of care genomic clinics. There will also be opportunities for training in genomic analysis.

This role will involve liaison with the senior executive of GenomeConnect in project management, contribution to regular genomic meetings and education sessions, and the development of teaching modules involving genomic testing for colleagues and students. Liaison with genomic laboratories and the promotion of the role of genomics in rare disorders and transition of care will be part of this role. The writing of case reports and other research studies related to the clinic will be encouraged.

This position is an 0.6 FTE at Level 4 for three years from commencement, and will be based between Westmead and Liverpool Hospitals as a secondment from Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA). NeuRA is an international leader in brain and nervous system research with goals to identify the causes and cures for neurological and psychiatric diseases. Additional genomic training opportunities will be based at the Sydney Children's Hospital campus and NSW Health Pathology Randwick.

Selection criteria:

  • An undergraduate degree in a non-medical discipline with a post graduate qualification in genetic counselling and either part 2 HGSA certification or equivalent experience or qualification
  • Experience in complex project management and research data collection
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills
  • High levels of computer literacy
  • Advanced decision making and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a team
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and show initiative
  • Insights and/or experience in medical genomics desirable
