The Opportunity

As a Counsellor within Medibank you will safely and efficiently manage calls and webchats to meet requirements for a range of programs. As part of our team, you will help vulnerable members of our community by providing accessible, quality health and wellbeing support to metropolitan, rural and remote communities. You will be initially trained to take calls on our 1800RESPECT First Response line and then will be crossed trained across our other programs.

All our counselling services are delivered according to Best Practice and Evidence-Based standards. The 1800RESPECT First Response line utilises a Trauma Informed Model of Practice. All our services provide high quality counselling for people experiencing emotional distress, general depression and anxiety issues; mental health education; referral to providers; crisis intervention; people who have experienced or at risk of family and domestic violence and sexual assault and counselling for people wishing to quit smoking. You will support every caller to accommodate their vulnerabilities of mental health issues which are affecting them as an individual.

The telephone and online based nature of this role will require you to multi-task between listening and supporting callers, typing notes and referring to clinical resources and online support tools. The programs provide a 24 hour service and we work on a fixed fortnightly roster system with options to work either full or part time. We offer work at home roles which allow you to balance work with other commitments and maintain your wellbeing.

We will also support you with training, ongoing education, coaching, and supervision. You will always feel part of the team no matter where you are based.

About You

To be successful in your application for this role, you will have the following

• A tertiary degree (of minimum three years duration) in a relevant discipline in social science, social work, welfare studies, psychology or counselling.
• OR a tertiary degree (of minimum three years duration in a different discipline) AND a post graduate degree or diploma in a relevant discipline in counselling, social science, social work, welfare studies, psychology.
• Minimum of two years full time counselling experience (post relevant qualifications) demonstrating the ability to work in a strength based or solutions focused framework.
• You will have knowledge of depression, anxiety and associated issues, particularly primary care pathways.

As part of your university course work you will have completed a mental health/abnormal psychology unit/subject and have relevant field/telephone based experience in mental health.

Your experience in working with victims and survivors of trauma, including sexual assault, and domestic or family violence would be a distinct advantage.

Please note we can only consider your post qualification (as outlined above) experience for this role. Please outline your counselling experience clearly on your resume with dates.

Other requirements include:

• Completion of our full time paid training program commencing on the 2nd to 13th August in Brisbane;
• Setting up a home office that meets our health and safety requirements, access to ADSL, NBN or cable with internet and telephone connection; and
• Working between 22.5 – 37.5 hours per week.
