From the carers on the front line working directly with patients and communities, to our talented support teams who enable that care, we plan, fund and deliver health services to the almost 600,000 New Zealanders that live in the Canterbury region. And we're all about putting people at the heart of everything we do.

Our Culture: What Matters To Us

Ko Te Whatu Manawa Tangata

Putting people at the heart of all we do

For us to continue putting our communities at the centre of our health system, we're putting our own people at the centre of everything we do. Because health is ultimately all about people. What's important around here is the way we care for and respect others, the responsibility that all our people take for delivering outcomes, and that we go about our work with integrity in all we do.

What matters to us is doing the right thing, valuing everyone, and being and staying well ourselves so we can care for our community.

The Role: What This Opportunity's All About

Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) is a public hospital laboratory providing services to the network of hospitals within the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) as well as the wider Canterbury and West Coast Health Systems situated in the South Island of New Zealand.

Canterbury Health Laboratories is a tertiary level facility providing core laboratory services and an extensive range of specialist testing covering a comprehensive range of disorders; we have particular interests in lipid disorders, porphyrias, trace metals, occupational health monitoring, workplace drug testing and maternal serum screening. We have extensive links with other laboratories within New Zealand and collaborative partnerships across Australasia and globally, being a reference laboratory for many specialist investigations.

As a member of the Chemical Pathologist team you will help shape the strategic direction of the Biochemistry laboratory service, ensuring that patients and referrers are provided with a world leading service. You will work closely with the experienced scientific staff to ensure appropriate use of the laboratory resource.

CHL has close links with the University of Otago, Christchurch School of Medicine, and the appointee will be expected to contribute to the undergraduate teaching programme. The pursuit of specialist and research interests is encouraged.

You will have effective interpersonal skills, be an excellent communicator and able to provide leadership to proactively drive continuous quality improvement. Participation in an on call roster will also be required. Reimbursement and allowance package will be based on experience and in-line with the National Collective Agreement for Senior Medical Officers.
