About the role

Mater Mothers Hospital currently has exciting permanent full time opportunities available within our exceptional Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) for passionate and enthusiastic Neonatal Nurse Practitioners looking to practice in a family-centered environment that cultivates a progressive and innovative culture.

As a senior member of the multidisciplinary team you will provide evidence-based autonomous clinical care for neonates within approved, established guidelines for advanced nursing practice that best meet the health needs of patients consistent with the strategic directions of Mater Health Service.

The Mater Mothers Hospital NCCU is one of Australia’s largest, comprising of 45 intensive care and 34 special care cot spaces. Our NCCU is a highly specialised and complex perinatal tertiary referral centre for sick and preterm babies and babies requiring cardiac and surgical care for the Southeast and central Queensland regions.

This is an excellent opportunity to broaden clinical expertise across a large multidisciplinary team and make a positive contribution to the overall level of service delivered within the NCCU.


Salary range: $61.06 - $62.58 (Nurse Practitioner) per hour plus superannuation

What you’ll be doing

As the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP), you will collaborate with consumers and the multidisciplinary team to utilise latest evidence to inform practice and deliver and coordinate quality care to the neonate and their family utilising a holistic family-centred approach. In addition, you will be required to pursue research and development of clinical practice guidelines, provide evidence-based education to health professionals and provide leadership and role modelling to nursing colleagues and medical staff within the team.

Your role as a NNP is an expert nurse clinician who manages and coordinates episodes of care as the primary provider or as part of the care team.

As a valued member of the team you will:

  • Function autonomously and collaboratively to conduct comprehensive, relevant and holistic assessment and management of patients using nursing knowledge and skills. This may include but is not limited to initiation and interpretation of diagnostic investigations, procedural interventions, diagnosis, prescribing of medications and direct referral of patients to other health care professionals.
  • Engage in, and support active participation in education and research to obtain optimal patient outcomes.
  • Prescribe and implement therapeutic interventions in accordance with federal and state legislation and professional regulation governing nurse practitioner practice.
  • Participate in continuing education, quality improvement initiatives, clinical outcome evaluation and monitoring.
  • Advocate for, participate in, or lead systems that support safe family-centered care, partnership and professional growth.

About you

As the successful candidate you will possess:

  • Current registration (no conditions or undertakings) as a General Nurse and hold current endorsement authorised by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) to practice as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Minimum 3 years full time equivalent experience as a NNP in a Level 6 tertiary neonatal nursery
  • Ability to independently assess complex and/or unstable health care needs, investigate and implement appropriate treatments and interventions of patients using relevant, appropriate and accurate data that inform differential diagnoses within advanced nursing practice guidelines.
  • Ability to implement innovations and develop direction in clinical practice by the initiation, utilisation and review of evidence-based research and quality improvement initiatives that address identified gaps in the provision of care and/or services.
  • Ability to provide clinical leadership, in terms of the design and evaluation of services for health promotion, leading practice, being responsible for leading a service, and taking responsibility for the practice of others.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional and educational development of others, with a commitment to own professional development and currency of practice, and to mentor nursing colleagues and others in the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and accountability while also working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and multi-service environment.
