Position Summary:

A vacancy exists in the above unit for a highly motivated Technical Officer with appropriate knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team. Our progressive and innovative team offers development opportunities for our staff and a caring environment for the delivery of high quality patient centred care. The successful applicant(s) will be expected to perform routine pathology testing within the Immunopathology laboratory which incorporates General Immunology, Flow Cytometry and Serology. Work in these areas includes automated and manual serology testing, immunochemistry, protein electrophoresis / immunofixation and flow cytometry specimen preparation and analysis.



The successful applicant will primarily be trained in Flow Cytometry, with potential to rotate to other areas within the Immunopathology section. Routine hours are from 8.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday, with an early shift (7.30am to 4.00pm) and rostered on call and Saturday hours on rotation, once trained.



Position requirements and duties include the following;

  • Perform laboratory testing and other allocated tasks accurately and in a timely manner
  • Maintain all equipment and supplies in the section/laboratory
  • Ensure the clinicians/locations are promptly informed of critical and urgent results
  • Monitor instrumentation and QC performance and report as appropriate
  • Perform tasks to ensure maintenance of the Quality System
  • Demonstrate initiative to ensure an efficient laboratory service
  • Perform all activities in such a way as to maintain safe work practices and a safe workplace
  • Be available to work as rostered to ensure the efficient functioning of the unit
  • Consult with supervisor or senior staff whenever appropriate
  • Communicate effectively and work as an effective team member
  • Train and directly supervise less experienced staff as required
  • Attend and participate in unit scientific / education sessions.
  • Attend at unit and SydPath meetings as per Quality Manual
  • Perform other duties as required



The vacancy is open to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens who hold a valid New Zealand passport, Australian permanent residents and those non-residents deemed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to be eligible to work in Australia only.

  • Sound knowledge of quality control procedures.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
