Clinical Education Program

The Clinical Education Program supports the hospital to achieve its strategic directions by the provision of frameworks for the professional development of health professionals.  The Clinical Education Program supports the growth and maintenance of the future nursing and midwifery workforce through coordination of the nursing and midwifery student, graduate and Transition to Specialty Practice (TSP) programs. The Clinical Education Program further collaborates with other health professional groups to promote best practice clinical learning environments (BPCLE) across the organization. The Clinical Education Program promotes pathways for engagement and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Professional Students and works with services to promote culturally safe environments for learning. The Clinical Education Program is the central collaborator for the Women’s Health Legal Alliance with Inner Melbourne Legal Service.

The Clinical Education Program promotes and supports contemporary professional practice within a collaborative framework, increasingly engaging a variety of self-directed and multi-media activities which incorporate adult learning principles and meet organisational needs to have workforce of safe, competent health professionals.  

Newborn, Intensive and Special Care (NICU)

Newborn Intensive and Special Care (NICU) is a tertiary level nursery where specialist care is provided to approximately 1600 premature and medically very sick babies per year (695 Intensive Care). The unit also has a key role in providing education and training for local, national and international health professionals and has an extensive research program.

The Women's neonatal unit has been designed as one unit with both intensive and special care nursery pods; with a total of 59 cots. The NICU model of care is under pinned by several principles which were developed to improve consistency and continuity of care and the engagement of families.

Your contribution  

The Clinical Educator (NICU) is a pivotal learning and education leadership position. This position has direct leadership of the Clinical Support Nurse (CSN) NICU team. The position is responsible for the development and delivery of a program of neonatal professional development for midwifery/nursing staff across the organisation (with a focus on NICU services) that promotes family centred care and meets strategic unit and organisational needs. The position is further responsible for coordinating the delivery of the clinical experience to employed post graduate NICU learners in collaboration with partner education providers, other educators and the NICU leadership team.  The position develops and coordinates professional development programs for internal and external participants including rural and regional partnerships and provides direct leadership to the NICU clinical support nurse (CSN) team.

Your duties will include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Develop frameworks for rural and regional placements at the Women’s NICU e.g. Maternity Connect program
  • Develop, coordinate and conduct professional development days for internal and external audiences
  • Deliver and support the employed post graduate NICU student program

About you

To be successful within this role you will need to have:

  • Registered nurse with recent and extensive experience in NICU
  • Current leadership/management experience.  Demonstrated ability to lead positive high performing teams
