Part-time (0.6 FTE) 12 months contract based in Darwin

About us:

Menzies School of Health Research (Menzies) is a medical research institute dedicated to improving the health and well-being of Indigenous Australians, and a leader in global and tropical research into life-threatening illnesses.

About the position:

The Child Health Division of Menzies is responsible for a program of multi-disciplinary research that investigates respiratory and ear health, life course and laboratory based research and effective evidence based clinical trials in partnership with external stakeholders, government agencies, communities, community health services, schools and non- government organisations to develop policies and practice to improve the health outcomes for Indigenous and non-Indigenous children.

The Audiologist is required to assess the hearing of all children from 1 to 3 years of age whose parents have consented to participation in a NHMRC-funded clinical trial.  The Audiologist will liaise with NT Hearing Health Program to ensure that all children that are at risk of developmental delay are prioritised.  All participating communities have the appropriate sound proof booths and equipment required.  The successful applicant will be required to travel on a regular (approximately fortnightly) basis to remote NT communities for up to 3 days per week, accompanied by one of the trained research nurses.

Key responsibilities of the role will be:

  • Identifying, assessing, documenting and treating hearing problems.
  • Discussing these diagnoses with parents and initiating referrals.
  • Managing data collection and maintaining data security

The successful applicant will have:

  • Postgraduate qualification in Clinical Audiology and paediatric clinical experience.
  • Understanding and knowledge of health issues affecting the wellbeing of indigenous children in contemporary Australian society.
  • Excellent communication skills including interpersonal skills with a range of audiences.
  • Experience with collaborative partnerships with the capacity to consult, collaborate and negotiate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Experience with basic computer software applications including Microsoft Office and familiarity with requirements for data entry into databases.
  • Willingness and ability to travel on light aircraft or 4WD to remote communities as part of a team for three days at a time, approximately twice a month.
  • The ability to maintain a current Australian drivers licence and a working with children clearance (OCHRE card).
