What do we do?

The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) was established to provide a coordinated and integrated approach to the planning, development and delivery of primary health care services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations within the South East Qld Region. The IUIH is a lead agency working in partnership with key stakeholders to support the effective implementation of the Council of Australian Governments ‘Closing the Gap’ initiatives.

This role: The purpose of this position is to provide services during pregnancy and up to six weeks after birth to women accessing Goodna clinic. The midwife will be required to communicate and collaborate with hospital based maternity services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait community controlled health services and other key stakeholder groups to ensure care is integrated within the broader primary, secondary and tertiary care teams.  Flexibility of the position will allow the midwife to meet the needs of women and other work commitments with a view to increase hours once demand for the service is established.

The position will be responsible for:

  • Provide antenatal and postnatal care for mother and baby appropriate to scope of practice
  • Order, review and respond to all relevant pathology and ultrasound scans
  • Collaborate with a range of other health practitioners, both internal and external to IUIH and member services
  • Ensure integration of the IUIH model of care that maximizes access to additional support and care
  • Develop and implement programs that will improve health and birth outcomes for mother and baby such as reducing the smoking rate and improving antenatal attendance; 
  • Coordinate and provide parenting education and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, carers and families through formal educational programs and opportunistically;
  • Provide breastfeeding support and education on feeding and nutrition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and babies;
  • Deliver holistic health care in a professional, confidential and culturally safe manner that consults with the community;
  • Participate in case review meetings with both internal and external stakeholders. 

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Endorsement to prescribe schedule medicines with the Nurses and Midwifery Board of Australia
  • Demonstrated experience in the delivery of high quality antenatal and postnatal care
  • Post graduate health qualifications
  • Current C Class Driver’s Licence (QLD)
  • Ability to travel across South East Queensland as required
  • Active member of the Australian College of Midwives (desirable)
  • Experience working in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community health sector (preferred)
