Nurse Unit Manager (Level 1), Austinmer Adolescent Ward, Forensic Hospital


 

The Forensic Hospital is an integral part of the Forensic Mental Health Network and is operated by the Justice Health & Forensic Mental Health Network.  Located at Malabar this purpose-built 135-bed mental health facility provides high-quality specialised care to male and female, young people and adult forensic patients, in a high-secure therapeutic environment.


 

 

The Nurse Unit Manager of the Adolescent Unit manages the day-to-day delivery of nursing services within the unit and is responsible and accountable for planning, development, implementation and evaluation of nursing services for persons admitted to the unit and will oversee the delivery of these services.  The NUM must ensure that mental health services are safely, effectively and efficiently delivered in this environment. Continuous mental health/physical health and risk assessment must occur as part of the comprehensive assessment, care coordination and recovery process. The mental health needs of persons who are in contact with the criminal justice system are complex by virtue of backgrounds of disadvantage, neglect and serious drug and alcohol issues compounded by offending behaviour in many cases.


 

The successful applicant to this role will be an AHPRA registered nurse with significant recent management experience, proven ability to manage and monitor staff performance, sound knowledge of the principles of clinical risk assessment, therapeutic security in a high secure setting and proven leadership skills.

  • Current authority to practice as a registered nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Post graduate qualification in Mental Health and recent clinical experience in an inpatient mental health facility or significant recent clinical experience in an inpatient mental health facility.
  • Tertiary qualification in health management or working towards, and/or equivalent experience or a combination of study and work.
  • Proven clinical leadership skills through demonstrated capacity to make effective clinical decisions during times of high demand.
  • Sound knowledge of the principles of risk assessment/management and therapeutic security in a forensic mental health setting.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills including verbal and written.
  • A commitment to self-learning and development.
  • Strong consumer focus and ability to relate to people with complex and challenging mental health needs in a non-judgmental and compassionate manner.
