All about where you will be working

The CHW Ward is a staffing initiative established in September 2014 at The Children’s Hospital Westmead. Grounded in a culture of learning and opportunity, the staff who comprise the CHW Ward team form a valuable component of our overall staffing resources within the Sydney Children’s Hospital.

CHW Ward staff will be supported to achieve their clinical learning and development goals by both the clinical staff in the wards and units. The team consists of Registered Nurses and Enrolled Nurses with medication endorsement and both Full-Time and Part-Time Permanent positions are available.

You will be allocated to work in wards and units where long-term staffing shortfalls exist such as: 

  • Surgical wards
  • Adolescents
  • Neonatal unit 
  • Emergency
You have the opportunity to develop your paediatric nursing experience across a broad range of specialities, including the opportunity to achieve speciality specific competencies where appropriate.


Shift hours vary between 8hr day and evening shifts & 10hr night duties to 12hr rotating rosters dependant on the allocated ward.

All staff are supported by ward NUM's and CNE's during their stay on the wards so roster requests and education needs are meet.

Applicants must have completed a new graduate year of nursing.

You will have

  • Minimum 2 year's Paediatric experience
    Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Recent clinical experience as a registered nurse in a hospital setting.
  • Effective time management skills
  • Computer literacy.
  • Capacity to work a seven (7) day rotating roster including public holidays and reasonable overtime
