What you'll be doing
The Aboriginal Health Worker works as a key member of the multi-disciplinary team, providing flexible primary health care services to Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander people and community; including activities in response to their holistic and cultural needs, to achieve better health access and outcomes. The Aboriginal Health Worker will work in partnership with the midwife to provide antenatal and postnatal care to Aboriginal women and/or babies.

Selection Criteria

  1. Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander decent (pursuant to Section 14 (d) of the Anti-discrimination Act 1977.
  2. Hold a minimum Certificate III Aboriginal Primary Health Care.
  3. Understanding of the following factors and how they influence Aboriginal people, their cultural understanding of health issues and their health outcomes- Australian history, socio economic influences, the complexities of chronic disease and preventable lifestyle illness.
  4. Demonstrated experience and understanding of the health issues impacting on Aboriginal women or women pregnant and giving birth to Aboriginal babies and the role of the Aboriginal Health Worker in the management of pregnancy and newborns.
  5. Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team and effectively communicate and collaborate with others, including Aboriginal people and communities.
  6. Demonstrated capacity to plan, develop, deliver, document and evaluate health promotion and education initiatives and the ability to use computer programs, as required within this process (including capacity to learn relevant programs, including those for patient records and data reporting).
  7. Current NSW Drivers Licence and the ability to travel within the local area and throughout Western NSW LHD.
