The Australian College of Midwives (ACM) is the national, not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to lead the Australian midwifery profession. The ACM advocates for midwives and midwifery; supports the professional interests of midwives; advances professional practice and education standards; provides marketing and communications to advance the ACM Mission; and ensures good governance and management of the ACM.

The Midwifery Advisor is an important position within the ACM Head Office team and is responsible for providing high quality professional advice on policy, research, professional and clinical practice, regulation and practice development issues to support the ACM Strategic Plan and the midwifery profession in Australia. The Midwifery Advisor will provide support and advice to the CEO, the Board of Directors, as well as the work of advisory and operational committees as required.

Position Description

The Midwifery Advisor will be responsible for

Professional advice:

  • Identify and respond to the professional needs of members and other maternity care providers based on legislative, regulatory, clinical and professional requirements collaborating with others where appropriate;
  • Lead and manage ACM programs, including the Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI), Midwifery Practice Review (MPR) and Clinical Mentoring Program (CMP);
  • Provide professional advice to internal and external stakeholders on matters that impact on midwives’ professional practice.

Policy:

  • Coordinate, oversee and develop the ACM’s responses to policy relevant to midwifery and maternity care;
  • Identify, develop, implement and monitor strategic plans, programs, policies, processes, systems and procedures to achieve ACM’s strategic priorities.

Research:

  • Adapt and apply relevant research evidence to the policies, publications and professional advice offered by the ACM, including the translation of evidence into practice.

Leadership and management:

  • Lead and manage relevant ACM and external advisory committees;
  • Represent the ACM at external meetings and forums;
  • Develop effective working relationships with key stakeholders;
  • Engender a culture that is proactive, evidence informed, respectful and progressive;
  • Be an effective member of the ACM management team;
  • Manage and grow the Professional Practice Unit’s human and financial resources;
  • Apply a business planning and marketing approach to all activities.

Selection Criteria

The successful applicant will meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Registered midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), with a minimum of 3 years recent midwifery experience in Australia;
  2. Relevant higher level qualification;
  3. Demonstrated understanding of midwifery practice, regulation and policy issues across a variety of settings;
  4. Demonstrated experience in midwifery policy, research, critical analysis and report/policy writing;
  5. Demonstrated high level communication and problem-solving skills;
  6. Demonstrated experience in the management of staff and resources; and
  7. Ability to work in a self-directed manner and collaboratively within a team to prioritise and meet deadlines.
